“The New Standard for B’nai-Mitzvah Books”

Last updated March 3, 2004

A talit is an important part of your son’s Bar-Mitzvah, as it allows him to fulfill the mitzvah (commandment) that is found the book of Numbers “The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel, and instruct them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments throughout the ages; let them attach a thread of blue to the fringe at each corner. That shall be your fringe; look at it and recall all the commandments of the Lord and observe them...” (Num. 15:37-39)

While we no longer use the blue thread, the talit remains an important and beautiful way for a Bar-Mitzvah to display his pride in Judaism.

There are different styles of talit: The full-size covers the back fully, and is pulled up over the shoulders. The second style is smaller, covers only part of the back, and is worn draped around the shoulders. In order to fulfill the commandment of wearing the talit, it must cover the shoulders, and at least part of the back. Therefore, those who choose the smaller style of talit should take care not to wear it around the neck like a scarf.

A talit is a wonderful gift for grandparents or parents to purchase for a Bar-Mitzvah. It is recommended that the Bar-Mitzvah be involved in selecting the style and colour, because wearing a talit is a personal expression, with the hope that the Bar-Mitzvah will be proud and excited to attend synagogue and wear his talit regularly.

I am pleased to be able to offer you the chance to purchase beautiful, hand-made Israeli talits. Gabrieli Weaving is based in Old Jaffa, Israel, where it has been making talits in silk, cotton, & wool since 1968.
